Short Description:
The amount of data we gather in some qualitative studies can be overwhelming – especially data from multi-day message boards. Traditional methods of analysis are functional, but they can be time-consuming. Digital tools can assist in the process. This webinar will begin with a quick review of traditional (no-tech or low-tech) tools, then will expose you to a sampling of higher-tech tools (Delve, NVivo, Reduct, and Relative Insight), explained by the QRCA members who use them. This will not be a how-to session; rather, it is “tasting menu” of some of the tools that can make the analysis of qualitative data less daunting.

Short Description:
When respondents become storytellers, things get human real quick. When respondents are given the opportunity to tell their narratives as they experience them, our biases as researchers take a backseat. Autoethnography turns the research enterprise on its head: We participate in their research, they take control and tell their own stories. We coach from the sidelines, while respondents are front and center. Autoethnography is a relatively new methodology for consumer research. It differs from journaling in that it allows the market research team to connect more deeply with the consumer through the peeling back of multiple layers of consciousness, thoughts, feelings, and beliefs. In this presentation, we discuss how autoethnography differs from other, more conventional methods. This presentation will contain a case study that shows a side by side comparison of autoethnography and journaling.

You know that stories are an effective way to broadcast information to an audience. But did you also know that real, everyday stories provide unparalleled insight into organizational and community cultures? The process of collecting and working with real, everyday stories is called Narrative Inquiry. There are various approaches. In this session, we'll provide a step-by-step overview of our approach, and describe how narrative inquiry can be used to identify and change patterns of organizational behavior.   As we share non-confidential learnings from collaborations with research partners in the US and Australia from different institutional contexts, you’ll learn best practices for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting relevant stories. Our session will end with an interactive simulation of the core step in our narrative inquiry process: Story Listening.

The use of Data Visualization for user experience research addresses a perceived need of extending the capabilities of the research team or individual; giving us the ability to display large datasets in insightful ways. Attendees to this talk will delve into learning about how to dimensionalize qualitative transcripts against quantitative survey data through a demonstration of a novel, custom visualization platform built from open-source tools. As researchers, we can begin to expand our skillsets and abilities in common tasks such as segmentation, correlation and pattern recognition. Whereas we will continually advocate for the benefits from the abstraction that Data Visualization provides, ethically, these techniques require a narrative that is constantly being validated through human connection. Our goal for the use of Data Visualization is not to become a shortcut that replaces generative ethnography, but instead positioned as a complementary tool for iterative research cycles.

What we say, what we intend, and how it’s interpreted—sometimes they all align for shared understanding; other times they don’t, and that can lead to conflict. conflict. If we don’t understand each other, how can we have the honest dialogue that’s needed to navigate the complex issues of the day—or even the simple interactions? How else can we build the foundations for healing and growth?

To ensure that qualitative findings aren't lost (or forgotten) in translation, researchers need to communicate insights in manageable, digestible formats that tell the story without overwhelming the reader or losing them in the details. Understanding how human physiology and psychology influence how information is read, understood and retained will enable researchers to design human-centered reports that will appeal to – not assault – the senses.

Do you fear the DIY research trend? Whether an independent researcher, part of a research agency, or a corporate research professional, the DIY research trend has likely impacted you. If your livelihood is focused on being hired by businesses to execute research, or you are someone who hires outside partners, access to new DIY technology can make it both easier and harder to execute meaningful qualitative research. So, let’s talk it out. We still all need each other, probably now more than ever. In this session, we will discuss the impact of the DIY research trend on both client-side and independent research professionals. Bringing it to life with real-world stories and advice for making these new relationships work for you. You will see how Doing it Together (DIT) can be actionable, profitable, and rewarding. This session includes research into the trend, case studies, and interactive activities that will help you plan for and embrace your own future.

The Emeritus SIG is thrilled to propose a panel presentation and discussion for the Virtual track of the annual QRCA Conference.  Our diverse panel of five is comprised of long-standing legacy members of QRCA and perhaps lesser-known qualitative experts. Panelists are: Jim Bryson, Ellen Good, JR Harris, Judy Langer, and Bonnie Perry. They embody a range of exciting and diverse paths: wilderness trekker/ author/speaker, health and life insurance broker/educator, an adjunct professor at Wharton, a docent with the Holocaust Museum Houston, the Executive Director of the Center for Learning and Living, the Tennessee Deputy Commissioner of the Bureau of Parks & Conservation. Each panelist has a unique story to tell of how they used skills cultivated during their career as a QRC, their personal vision and fortitude to create satisfying new endeavors with or without remuneration. Their journeys have not been seamless; there have been challenges, learning and re-directs along the way.

What happens when you bring the sharing economy to the world of research?  Exciting things happen.  This presentation will show qualitative researchers how to think creatively (and practically!) about using alternative venues for conducting qualitative research.  We will explore how platforms such as AirBnB and Peerspace can be invaluable options to find the perfect spot to host a session, and we’ll talk about the ways to ensure that a project is a success once you identify the right non-traditional location.  The session will draw upon the real-world experiences of the presenters using unique spaces to conduct qualitative research. Among those experiences will be a case study in the snacking category, where an LA mansion proved to be the ideal setting for three days of focus groups and client innovation sessions for a start-up client on a budget, leading to the development of a pipeline of new product ideas, some of which are now in the marketplace.

A creative, safe, focused space.  What are we describing here? A successful focus group  environment-- and also a mind that has become quiet and powerful through meditation. When we engage in meditation, we bring ourselves to a place of clarity and calm. This is precisely the mind we need to employ in order to authentically connect with our respondents. Through practicing meditation, we are primed to listen in new ways. We open ourselves up to be able to slip into the shoes of others, to develop empathy and understanding – and appreciation – of where others are coming from. An open-hearted mind engenders trust, which leads to better focus groups and better client relationships.

While the topic was delicate and often considered taboo, the conversation had to take place. It served as the foundation of the state's 5-year strategic plan on Sexual Violence Prevention. Questions we asked ourselves: How do we find willing participants? What is the best way to connect with these audiences? Who should we partner with to gain trust and ensure candor among participants? What we learned may surprise you.

In this presentation, a professional videographer, editor and documentary filmmaker Anya Zadrozny will detail the things every researcher should consider to identify when and how to create and include video in research projects – from true DIY (just you and things you already own) to a full-scale production (hiring and working with a cameraperson and editor).

Short Description:
The Chinese word for crisis is composed of two characters — 危机 — one signifying ‘danger’ and one signifying ‘opportunity.’ We have begun to see this duality play out in the way that brands are being judged, and their reputations and images changed, by how they have been behaving and communicating not just in response to the pandemic, but also in response to the recent wave of protests for racial justice. Insights from our newly launched WhatsApp Community of consumers and small business owners, show that people are displaying a heightened sensitivity to how ‘corporate America’ is behaving and which ‘side’ companies are on – with a new landscape of heroes and villains emerging. Understanding how people are assessing brands in this climate of heightened moral judgement could give companies a crucial advantage in terms of driving their responses and framing their messaging.

In this highly interactive, facilitated session we will tap into the diversity of our collective thought to ideate on ways qualitative researchers can continue to act. We will introduce the virtual “room” to trusted facilitation tools (micro structures) that allow all stories to emerge in a respectful, open, conversational way, using human centered design principles applied in design thinking and education to gather new ideas and data.

Jugaad is an innovation mindset and also a way of problem-solving in daily life in India. It loosely translates to ‘Hack’ in English, but in India, for everything that may seem difficult to do, you will very commonly hear someone say ‘Let’s find a Jugaad’ - a creative way around the system. Jugaad solutions are born out of constraints in resources and through resilience, and are therefore, very creative in their approach and design. While Jugaad has been criticised for its limitations with scalability, company leaders and innovators have sought to make it a part of the formal innovation process to capture its essence of resilience, creativity and fast problem-solving. Through our talk, we want to highlight Jugaad as a fresh approach for a resource-constrained future that will require us to live a minimal, carbon-neutral lifestyle.

For those QRCs that work in communications, these people will become your future clients. But the world has rapidly changed. Different tools are available. The age of creative-test focus groups may be over. What are these people looking for in their qualitative research? What kinds of methodologies and approaches are most valuable to them? What are the needs of the modern creative industry? This workshop will be co-led by Ryan Romero, an industry leader who teaches the Texas Creative program and will incorporate several current students who are at the leading edge of advertising in a structured forum to help Quallies meet the needs of Creatives and vice versa. We all have lots to learn from each other.

Create questions designed to capture the language of the consumer or target population. Are you getting the actual voice of the consumer or yes/no answers? Short Description:
In research, we can feel caught in the tension between achieving research objectives we have been tasked with, while also staying present with respondents and listening in the moment. We are charged with taking in what those we are interviewing have to say, without jumping ahead to premature conclusions or assumptions. It can become a balance of driving to an objective or conclusion, while also allowing the information to come to us authentically. Taking time to discover new ways of thinking about how we can best prepare for this important role of listening and receiving data from a neutral mindset can lead to more clarity in our analysis.
