Ask a marketer about their marketing strategy, a salesperson about their sales strategy, an IT person about their IT strategy, you will get an answer. Ask a researcher about their research strategy and you are likely to get a furrowed brow. So, what is research strategy? Many of the conversations swirling around the professionalization of our field are ultimately questions of research strategy. We just haven’t seen them as such, and consequently, we’ve been treating symptoms instead of the underlying causes. We talk a lot about how to do research but not about what research should be done. We talk about managing stakeholders but not about managing ourselves. We talk about increasing our influence but not about how to measure impact. Research Strategy brings processes and frameworks to bear to ensure that research activities are deliberate, effective, and aligned with business objectives. Notably, it is not just the purview of research leadership! All of us are already engaged in this work, but we haven’t been talking about it as such. Chris will present his work in this area and invite others to join him in evolving this emerging practice.
